Pay Zakat ul-Fitr

Purify your fast and bring joy to the needy on Eid

What is Zakat ul-Fitr?

Zakat ul-Fitr, also known as Fitrana or Sadaqat ul-Fitr, is an obligatory charity that every Muslim must pay before the Eid ul-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan. It serves two important purposes: to purify the fasting person from any indecent act or speech, and to provide food for the needy so they can also celebrate Eid.

Unlike Zakat (annual wealth tax), Zakat ul-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim, regardless of age, who possesses food in excess of their needs. It must be paid on behalf of yourself and all dependents in your household.

"The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) enjoined Zakat ul-Fitr on the one who fasts to shield him from any indecent act or speech, and for the purpose of providing food for the needy." - Abu Dawud

Who Must Pay Zakat ul-Fitr?

  • Every Muslim who has food beyond their immediate needs
  • Parents must pay on behalf of minor children
  • Paid for all dependents in the household
  • Includes newborns if born before Eid prayer

When Should It Be Paid?

Zakat ul-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer. The preferred time is the day or two before Eid. However, you can pay earlier during Ramadan to ensure the charity reaches those in need in time for Eid celebrations.

Important: If Zakat ul-Fitr is paid after the Eid prayer, it becomes a regular sadaqah (charity) and does not fulfill the obligation. Please pay before Eid prayer to ensure your obligation is met.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Zakat and Zakat ul-Fitr?

Zakat is the annual obligatory charity (2.5% of wealth above nisab), while Zakat ul-Fitr is a flat amount paid per person at the end of Ramadan before Eid prayer. Zakat ul-Fitr is obligatory on all Muslims regardless of wealth, while Zakat is only obligatory on those who meet the nisab threshold.

Can I pay Zakat ul-Fitr early in Ramadan?

Yes, you can pay Zakat ul-Fitr any time during Ramadan. In fact, paying early is encouraged to ensure the charity reaches those in need in time for them to benefit from it on Eid day.

Do I need to pay for a baby born during Ramadan?

If a baby is born before the Eid prayer, Zakat ul-Fitr should be paid on their behalf. If the baby is born after the Eid prayer, Zakat ul-Fitr is not obligatory for that child for this year.

Who receives Zakat ul-Fitr?

Zakat ul-Fitr is distributed to those eligible for Zakat - primarily the poor and needy who do not have enough food for themselves and their families. The goal is to enable them to celebrate Eid without worrying about food.
