Common Questions About Zakat

What is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory act of worship requiring Muslims to give 2.5% of their qualifying wealth annually. It purifies your wealth and supports those in need.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold that makes Zakat obligatory. It's equivalent to 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. If your net assets exceed either threshold, Zakat is due.
Should I use the Gold or Silver Nisab?
Most scholars recommend using the Silver Nisab as it's the lower threshold, meaning more people qualify to give and more recipients benefit. You may choose either standard based on your school of thought.
Is Zakat due on my home or car?
No. Your primary residence, personal vehicle, clothing, and household furniture are exempt. Only investment properties, rental income saved, and assets held for trade are Zakatable.
When should I pay Zakat?
Zakat is due once your wealth has been above the Nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan to earn extra reward.
Does 100% of my Zakat reach those in need?
Yes. Qurbani Foundation Canada maintains a strict 100% Zakat policy — every dollar goes directly to eligible recipients with zero administrative deductions.
